2017 College Application Deadlines at the Top 50 Schools

The college application process is stressful and confusing and hard to wrap your head around. Which activities should you include on your application? Who should write your letters of recommendation? What story should you tell in your personal statement? What’s the best school for me? And the list of questions goes on and on…

What should not be confusing, however, is knowing when the 2017 college application deadlines are. Yet, schools seem to make this increasingly difficult with new types of applications and deadlines every year. We have laid out the difference between ways to apply to schools as well as when to apply with our list of the 2017 college application deadlines at the top 50 schools.

What are the different types of early and regular applications?

  • Early Decision: Early Decision (ED) is an early application which is binding, meaning that if you are accepted, you must attend that school. ED applications are best suited to students who are certain they want to attend a specific school. ED is a great way to show a specific school that it is your top choice. If you apply ED, you can also apply Early Action to other schools, although certain schools do not allow this. You should research your ED school of choice to see which options it offers.
  • Early Action: Early Action (EA) is an open early application, meaning that you are not bound to attend, if admitted. If you are accepted, you can also apply to schools regular decision. In most cases, you are able to apply to multiple EA schools as well as an ED school.
  • Restrictive Early Action: Restrictive EA is an early application that is not binding, but limits the number of early applications you can submit. You can only apply early (ED or EA) to this single school. If admitted, you do not have to attend that school, and you can still apply Regular Decision to other colleges.
  • Early Decision II: Early Decision II (EDII) is similar to ED in that it is a binding application. However, this is a later deadline, which typically coincides with the Regular Decision deadline at schools offering this option. EDII is a great way to show interest in your second choice school if you are not admitted ED or EA to your number one choice.
  • Regular Decision: Regular decision deadlines typically happen between January and February, although the UC deadlines are at the end of November. These are not binding, and they are the final 2017 college application deadlines
