It’s a well-known fact that no matter how many questions one fields regarding MBA applications and applying to business school, you will always encounter new ones. That also means, with each new cycle, business school applicants are becoming that much more savvy, greater informed, and ever more competitive.

One of the most common questions that law school applicants ask our admissions experts is some variation of the following: “are top law schools going to accord my undergraduate record less respect because it’s not a highly-ranked school?”

The personal statement and various supplemental college essays are some of the most difficult pieces of writing you will likely ever be confronted with in your life. With the stakes so high, the need for profundity under such word count and time limit constraints can be suffocating. However, you will find that once you get over the initial hump and get a first draft on paper, things will flow much more easily from there.

Business school deadlines are fast approaching and it’s time to write the most compelling essay of your academic and professional career thus far. As you sit down, reflect deeply and intensely on the following before you submit your business school application essays:

Gone are the times when law school admissions were only based on your LSAT scores and your undergraduate GPA. While those two factors still remain extremely important, admission committees now seek qualities that make you stand out among a diverse swath of candidates.

In speaking with my colleagues – former admissions officers from many of the most competitive business schools – there are some very common mistakes that applicants make that turn an otherwise highly competitive application into one that is thrown into the “maybe” list or worse, passed over completely.

“Show, don’t tell” is frequently delivered advice for medical school personal statements and secondary essays. What exactly does that mean? This is a common problem in personal statements, and I’ve been struggling with how to better convey this idea to applicants. So, I will take that advice and “show” you, rather than “tell” you the difference.
