About Lauren Hofschneider

Nice to meet you! I’m Lauren, and I am a Graduate Coach with InGenius Prep. A little about myself: Mentorship and teaching is a core part of my personal philosophy. This was in no small part due to my upbringing on Saipan, a 12-by-5-mile Pacific Island. Often, academic resources were scarce, and I had to teach myself about the application processes at top US universities. Through the formal and informal mentorship that I received, I was accepted into UC Irvine and pursued my studies in Psychology and Social Behavior.

UC Irvine was an excellent training ground for my work at InGenius Prep and as a current Ph.D. student at UCLA. At UC Irvine, I worked closely with faculty and graduate students on the fundamentals of psychological research, and eventually, I conducted an independent research project. Upon graduating, I was awarded the Excellence in Research Distinction for my honor’s thesis. Additionally, I worked as a Life COACH at the UC Irvine Counseling Center. In this position, I used theory-driven techniques to help my diverse student clientele achieve their goals, from finding a part-time job to time management.

In my Ph.D. program in Health Psychology, I study how socioeconomic inequalities influence our eating behaviors. I work closely with my undergraduate research assistants and mentored several of them through independent projects, manuscripts, applications for graduate program, and research grants. I also hold several leadership positions, such as the Co-Chair of the Transfer Outreach Committee for the Underrepresented Graduate Students in Psychology. In this role, I worked with students of diverse racial, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds and have led several outreach events, workshops, and guest panels. My strong commitment to diversity and teaching “best practices” have been recognized by my department and the university. I am the 2020 recipient of the Dean’s Excellent Award, which is given to students who show outstanding contributions to teaching and diversity.

Outside of school, I am a painter. My favorite medium is water mixable oil because it’s better for the environment. My five-year goal is to submit my work to an exhibition. I am also an avid tennis player and karaoke enthusiast. On the weekends, I’m probably planning a themed dinner party or playing Settlers of Catan!
