Why Objective Academic Evidence Matters Again<\/h2>\n

Introduction<\/b><\/h3>\n

Every year, admissions offices remind us that they\u2019re looking at the \u201cwhole student.\u201d And that\u2019s true\u2014up to a point. But 2025 has marked a sharp shift back toward what I\u2019d call <\/span>objective academic evidence<\/b>: standardized test scores, externally graded work, AP and IB exams, and other measurable indicators of readiness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why now? Because too many of the softer pieces of a college application\u2014essays, recommendation letters, even resumes\u2014are harder than ever to evaluate with confidence. Add the FAFSA fiasco of 2024<\/a>, which scrambled yield models and financial aid distribution, and the result is predictable: colleges are looking for signals they can trust. Families need to understand why this reset is happening, what the data says about who\u2019s applying and where, and how to plan accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Testing Is Back\u2014And It\u2019s About Trust<\/b><\/h3>\n

After nearly five years of test-optional momentum, the pendulum has swung the other way. Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown, Caltech, Georgetown, and UT Austin now require test scores again. Yale has adopted a \u201ctest-flexible\u201d policy that allows AP or IB scores in lieu of SAT\/ACT. According to the <\/span>Washington Post<\/span><\/i>, many of the most selective schools are now openly saying that testing is essential for fair comparison.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Common App data tells the story: for the first time since the pandemic, <\/span>test score reporting rose 11% in 2025<\/b>. That\u2019s not just a statistical blip. It reflects families leaning back into testing, sensing its renewed weight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTest scores have continued to predict academic performance in Yale College \u2026 and test scores are the single greatest predictor of a student\u2019s performance in Yale courses in every model we have constructed.\u201d \u2014 Jeremiah Quinlan, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions & Financial Aid, Yale University (<\/span><\/i>Feb. 22, 2024<\/span><\/i><\/a>).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Why is testing back? There are three main reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Predictive power.<\/b> As Harvard noted in its announcement, test scores remain among the best predictors of first-year academic performance when paired with GPA. Without them, admissions officers struggled to fairly compare students from vastly different high schools.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Equity in context.<\/b> Paradoxically, testing can help level the playing field. A 1450 SAT score from a rural high school that rarely sends students to selective colleges may carry more weight than straight A\u2019s alone. Dartmouth pointed out that scores help uncover hidden talent outside the prep school pipeline.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Trust in a skeptical age.<\/b> With AI-assisted essays, consultant-polished applications, and grade inflation making it harder to discern authenticity, colleges want something they can verify. A digital, proctored SAT isn\u2019t perfect\u2014but it\u2019s comparable across applicants in a way an essay simply isn\u2019t.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    To put it simply: testing is back because it offers colleges a piece of the puzzle they can still believe.<\/span><\/p>\n

    All of this loops back to the same idea: <\/span>colleges want proof<\/b>\u2014scores and subject exams they can compare across wildly different high schools.<\/span><\/p>\n

    2. FAFSA\u2019s Shockwave Is Still Reverberating<\/b><\/h3>\n

    If testing is about trust, FAFSA has been about chaos. The 2024 rollout of the new FAFSA was riddled with technical failures and delays. The Government Accountability Office reported a <\/span>9% drop in first-time FAFSA filers<\/b>\u2014about 432,000 fewer students seeking aid. A Lumina\/Gallup poll found that <\/span>25% of applicants had trouble even submitting the form<\/b>, and <\/span>31% of families said the delays directly affected their enrollment choices<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Private colleges felt the pain too. A NAICU survey revealed that nearly <\/span>half of private institutions struggled to fill their 2024 classes<\/b> because financial aid information came too late. State systems scrambled: California extended its Cal Grant deadline after applications dropped by <\/span>25%<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The numbers have started to rebound\u2014the Class of 2025 FAFSA completion rate climbed back to <\/span>53.9%<\/b>, near pre-pandemic levels\u2014but the damage to trust lingers. As one NASFAA panel put it: <\/span>\u201cThe starting line was delayed, but the school year\u2019s start date wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/i> Families had to make life-changing decisions without reliable aid data.<\/span><\/p>\n

    And here\u2019s the key connection: when yield models are shaken by aid uncertainty, colleges double down on what they <\/span>can<\/span><\/i> measure reliably. FAFSA chaos has indirectly strengthened the case for test scores, AP\/IB results, and other quantifiable evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Tuition Trends (2024\u201325)<\/b><\/h3>\n

    Tuition isn\u2019t spiking\u2014uncertainty is.<\/b> The College Board\u2019s 2024\u201325 figures show modest year-over-year increases: about <\/span>+2.5%<\/b> at public two-year colleges, <\/span>+2.7%<\/b> for <\/span>in-state<\/span><\/i> public four-years, and <\/span>+3.9%<\/b> at private nonprofit four-years. Importantly, once you adjust for ~3.1% inflation, <\/span>public-sector<\/span><\/i> published tuition and fees actually <\/span>declined in real terms<\/b>. Families don\u2019t feel that, though\u2014because they plan around <\/span>sticker<\/span><\/i> price and won\u2019t see their <\/span>net<\/span><\/i> price until aid lands. That timing gap matters in a post-FAFSA-fiasco world.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Budgets still bite.<\/b> Even with relatively tame tuition growth, the all-in <\/span>student budgets<\/b> (tuition + fees + room\/board + transport, etc.) remain hefty: an average of <\/span>$29,910<\/b> for <\/span>in-state<\/span><\/i> students at public four-years, <\/span>$49,080<\/b> for <\/span>out-of-state<\/span><\/i> at publics, and <\/span>$62,990<\/b> at private nonprofits in 2024\u201325. Housing and food do a lot of the damage; they are the elastic pieces that pushed families into uncomfortable guesswork when FAFSA ran late.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

    Net price helps\u2014but opacity hurts.<\/b> After grants and scholarships, the <\/span>average net cost of attendance<\/b> (not just tuition) in 2024\u201325 was about <\/span>$20,780<\/b> at public four-years and <\/span>$36,150<\/b> at private nonprofits\u2014meaning the <\/span>typical<\/span><\/i> student pays far less than sticker. Yet until aid packages arrive, families can\u2019t plan around those numbers with confidence. That\u2019s why the FAFSA delays didn\u2019t just frustrate people; they <\/span>froze decisions<\/b>. Colleges, unsure of yield, leaned more heavily on inputs they could evaluate early and compare fairly\u2014test\/AP\/IB results\u2014long before aid finalized.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The longer arc:<\/b> College Board researchers also note that, <\/span>inflation-adjusted<\/b>, published tuition and fees are lower in 2024\u201325 than in 2019\u201320<\/strong> across all three sectors,\u00a0<\/span>helped by state support and tuition freezes. That\u2019s good macro news, but it doesn\u2019t erase household-level anxiety when award letters arrive late or change. Again, this cycle rewarded applicants who paired strong academic signals with on-time, accurate aid filings.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
