Darryl Tiggle has served as Director of College Counseling at Friends School of Baltimore since 2009 and has worked in a combination of college counseling and admissions for the last 24 years. His experience in admissions began at his alma mater Union College where he became compelled by the complexity of the process and how important admissions is in shaping the culture and insuring the sustainability of institutions.
After 10 years working at Union, he moved on to the role of Director of Admissions at Lasell College in Newton, MA as they were making the transition from a 2-year women’s college, to a 4-year co-educational institution. This experience provided valuable insight into the fact that students at all levels of academic prowess are looking for colleges where they can thrive. Darryl’s most recent college admissions experience was spent at Tufts University where he served as Senior Associate Director. Having amassed a great deal of knowledge about college admissions prior to this role, his skill set was further enhanced at Tufts being immersed in the world of highly competitive college admissions and became well versed in the nuances of selection.
The time spent in college admissions both inspired an interest in how the process is perceived from the student perspective, and a desire to share his enthusiasm and knowledge to make this process less mysterious. He was fortunate to receive the Director position at Friends back in 2009 and has enjoyed a wonderful time building his team and counseling program.
In 2012 Darryl and his wife Geneva founded SAGE Counsel as a way to level the college-going playing field for public school students by providing the same kind of personalized, advanced, and highly accessed college counsel available to private and independent school students. Through SAGE, Mr. Tiggle has been afforded opportunities to work with constituencies from diverse backgrounds including individual student families, public high school guidance programs, and community based organizations. His students have matriculated at institutions ranging from colleges in the Ivy League, National Universities, to hidden gems like Grinnell, Harvey Mudd, Skidmore, and Pitzer Colleges. His goal is to provide the same level of care and efficacy to his clientele regardless of financial means or sophistication about college admissions.
