Frequently Asked Questions

What is a DO school?

DO schools, or osteopathic medical schools, train students for a holistic approach to patient treatment and healthcare. Through a focus on hands-on natural treatments and promotion of a healthier lifestyle, DO schools teach their students to improve patients’ overall well being and focus on the prevention of diseases.

Is DO school easier to get into than MD school?

Not necessarily. Though the average GPA and MCAT scores are lower for DO schools, they are still quite high, with an average GPA of 3.5 and MCAT of 503. Additionally, there are far fewer DO schools which can make the competition fierce.

Can DO students enter the National Residency Match Program?

Yes, but they don’t always have the same results as their MD counterparts. 84.6% of DO students are matched while 93.9% of MD students are matched.

What exam do I have to take to become licensed as a doctor?

MD students take the USMLE to receive their license while DO students take the COMLEX. The American Medical Association recognizes and promotes both of these exams on an equal basis.
