Depending on the student’s abilities, 10th or 11th grade is the perfect time to start preparing for the SAT and ACT. We always recommend that our students take the SAT/ACT for the first time during the winter or spring of 11th grade. This allows students time to retake the test, if needed.
Both the SAT and ACT tests are challenging and evaluate students objectively. However, students can be strategic and play to their strengths when deciding which test to take. Students who do better with more time and are stronger in problem-solving and analytical skills should take the SAT. Students who are fast test-takers and have a strong grasp of material knowledge should take the ACT.
It’s extremely important to take either the SAT/ACT because a high test score combined with a strong transcript will increase your chances of admission. Taking the test is especially crucial to achieve a “threshold score” if you’re aiming for top-ranked schools.
