If your standardized test scores do not accurately reflect your academic potential, applying test-optional may be a smart choice. However, Northwestern was initially hesitant to adopt this policy, and a relatively small percentage of admits apply without scores. If you choose this route, your application will need to stand out in other areas, such as extracurricular achievements, essays, and letters of recommendation.
Northwestern requires two letters of recommendation. One must come from your school counselor, academic advisor, or college counselor and should speak to your overall academic performance, personal qualities, and engagement within your school community. The second should be from a teacher who can comment on your strengths in the classroom and your intellectual curiosity. Ideally, this teacher will have taught you in 11th or 12th grade in a core academic subject such as English, math, science, social studies, or a foreign language.
