John F. McMahon is a Graduate Coach with InGenius Prep based in Iowa. He has extensive experience in educational leadership and admissions. He is a three-time graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Education, and a Master of Science in Educational Administration. His graduate studies were completed through Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education and the Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program.
With over 20 years of organizational leadership experience, John has held various roles in secondary school administration, including teacher, activities director, dean of students, principal, and president. Through these leadership positions, he has helped students develop critical skills, leadership potential, and meaningful extracurricular involvement, shaping them into strong college applicants.
John has also guided countless students through the college admissions process, assisting with everything from the initial college search to application strategy, essay writing, and decision-making. He provides comprehensive writing teaching and tutoring services to high school students through Varsity Tutors. As an Essay Tutor for American Study, he has coached over 250 Vietnamese students seeking college admissions in the United States, with a 99%+ satisfaction rate among students. He has also edited and evaluated over 1000 essays for applications to schools, including 19 of the top 25 universities in the United States.
At the heart of John’s passion for teaching is his love for witnessing students overcome self-doubt—watching the fear fade from their eyes as they realize they are capable of more than they imagined. He understands that navigating the college admissions process can feel overwhelming and takes pride in guiding students and families through every step of the journey.
