Admissions Overview

Dreaming of becoming a Quaker? The University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League gem in Philadelphia, offers top-tier academics and a dynamic urban experience. Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1740, UPenn has shaped leaders like Elon Musk and John Legend. But with a highly competitive admissions process, how do you stand out?

What UPenn Really Looks For in Applicants

Interdisciplinary Thinkers

UPenn values students who excel in challenging coursework and approach problems through multiple lenses. Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to cross traditional academic boundaries—especially through programs like the Huntsman or M&T—stand out in the application process.

Leaders with Purpose

Inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s legacy, UPenn looks for applicants who turn ideas into action. Whether through service, advocacy, entrepreneurship, or research, the most compelling candidates have made a measurable impact rooted in their personal values.

Distinctive Voices & Perspectives

UPenn seeks students who bring fresh viewpoints, cultural insight, or unique life experiences to its collaborative community. The admissions team wants to see how you’ll contribute to the campus culture—and how you’ll use UPenn’s resources to amplify your impact beyond it.

  • High School Transcript (showing rigorous coursework)
  • Standardized Test Scores (SAT/ACT – optional for 2024-25 cycle)
  • Letters of Recommendation (from teachers and counselor)
  • Activities List (demonstrating leadership & impact)
  • Personal Statement & UPenn Supplements (showcasing authenticity and fit)
  • School-Specific Portfolio (if applying to specialized programs like Wharton, Nursing, or Fine Arts)
  • Interview (if offered)
Application Deadlines:
  • Early Decision: November 1

  • Regular Decision: January 5

Should You Submit Your Test Scores to UPenn?

UPenn currently has a test-optional policy but will require SAT or ACT scores starting with the 2025-26 application cycle. While standardized tests are just one part of the admissions process, strong scores can enhance your application. For the Class of 2028, 71% of ACT submitters scored between 35-36, and 88% of SAT submitters scored between 1500-1600, highlighting the competitive range of admitted students.

GPA Expectations

UPenn is highly competitive, with an average admitted student GPA of 3.9. To stand out, applicants should aim for mostly A’s in challenging coursework, such as AP, IB, or honors classes, to demonstrate readiness for college-level academics.

If your GPA is below 3.9, a strong SAT or ACT score can help balance your application. Since GPA is harder to improve in later high school years, excelling in standardized testing, extracurricular achievements, and essays can strengthen your profile.

Activities List

UPenn values leadership, initiative, and impact in extracurricular activities. Focus on impact over involvement, take on leadership roles, and create meaningful change in your activities. Here’s what a weak vs. strong profile looks like:

Less Competitive Applicant Competitive Applicant
Student Government Member, no leadership VP, launched a sustainability project
Debate Club Local competitions, no major achievements State finalist, mentored younger members
Community Service Occasional volunteering, no sustained impact Founded a STEM tutoring program
Soccer Team JV player, no leadership Varsity captain, organized a fundraiser
Part-Time Job Worked weekends, no advancement Shift leader, managed employee schedules
Why It Falls Short
Lacks leadership, initiative, and long-term commitment.
Why It Stands Out
Demonstrates leadership, initiative, and tangible impact.

Approaching The Supplemental Essay

First-year applicants must respond to three short-answer prompts (150–200 words each):

  • Thank-You Note: Write a letter to someone you’ve never formally thanked. (First-year applicants only)

  • Community at UPenn: How will you engage with and contribute to UPenn’s community?

  • School-Specific Essay: How do your academic interests align with your chosen school?

    • Arts & Sciences: What are you curious about and how would you explore it?

    • Engineering: How will you pursue engineering at UPenn?

    • Wharton: Reflect on an issue you care about and how Wharton would support your interest.

    • Nursing: How will you advance equity in healthcare and grow through UPenn?

Applicants to specialized or dual-degree programs may have additional essays. Use each prompt to show curiosity, purpose, and strong fit with UPenn.

Our Expert Admissions Tips

Apply Early Decision if You’re Sure

UPenn’s Early Decision acceptance rate is higher than Regular Decision. If UPenn is your top choice and you’re ready to commit, applying ED can boost your chances.

Choose the Right Program

Only apply to Wharton, Penn Engineering, or Nursing if you’re fully committed. The College of Arts and Sciences offers flexibility, but transferring between schools is difficult. Align your choice with your genuine interests.

Connect with Current Students & Professors

Speaking with UPenn students or faculty can provide insight into campus life and strengthen your application. A conversation with a professor in your field of interest can help shape a compelling supplemental essay.

Build a Relationship with Your Counselor

Your high school counselor’s recommendation is important. Stay engaged with them early on so they can advocate for you and provide a strong letter of support.

Is UPenn the Right Fit For You?

UPenn offers a challenging, interdisciplinary environment with top-ranked programs in business, law, medicine, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. It’s a great fit for students who thrive in rigorous academics, value innovation, and want to make a tangible impact on their communities.

Consider UPenn if you:

  • Seek an intellectually stimulating environment that emphasizes both theory and real-world application.
  • Have clear academic and career interests that align with UPenn’s programs and resources.
  • Value diversity, collaboration, and leadership in a fast-paced, ambitious setting.

However, UPenn isn’t the right fit for everyone. Ask yourself:

  • What makes UPenn stand out to me?
  • Do my aspirations align with its mission?
  • Would another university better fit my goals?

Choosing the right school is personal. If UPenn feels like the best place to challenge and inspire you, go for it!
