Hi there! I’m Hollie Buttery, a Graduate Coach and graduate student in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University. I completed my BA in History of Art and Literature from the University of East Anglia in the UK and went on to receive my first master’s from the Department of World Art Studies there in 2016. I also completed a further master’s at Stanford University’s Department of Art and Art History. I am currently writing my thesis on the emergence and origins of caricature in seventeenth-century Europe. This generally means I spend a lot of hours researching old, bad, jokes and trying not to laugh in public libraries!
Applying to schools is an exciting and nerve-wracking time. As someone who has been through the process several times, I know it is important to have fun and extenuate every student’s authentic, unique self. Good grades are key, but enthusiasm, passion, innovation, and creativity are just as essential. Having taught several classes at both Harvard and Stanford as a graduate teaching fellow, I am well practised in supporting students to reach their full potential.
Outside of my academic career, I am a practising artist, writer, poet, and a very keen – though sadly tragically unskilled – gardener.
