Gameheads 2024 Annual Showcase Summary

Rubin Caco

Gameheads just had their 2024 Annual Showcase last Saturday, August 24. In the interest of advancing students and their passion for tech and the video game industry, InGenius Prep and Gameheads have partnered to help students from all walks of life meet their educational goals and give them the best chance at getting accepted into their dream colleges.

What is Gameheads?

Gameheads is a nonprofit organization based in Oakland, CA, aimed at empowering students and young people to break into the tech industry. With a focus on video game design, video game development, and DevOps, Gameheads partners with industry giants like Unity, Comcast, and Xbox, as well as studios like 2K Games.

Gameheads was recently featured in the Marketplace Morning Report, and last Saturday was Gameheads' 10th Annual Showcase, where InGenius Prep's Transfer Admissions Expert Kevin Covarrubias was also invited to speak.

The 2024 Annual Showcase

At the showcase, students are invited to speak and present the video games that they have developed over the past academic year. This year's Annual Showcase was held at Northeastern University's new Oakland campus, where an estimated 300+ people attended. Students presented their year-long projects—video games developed with the guidance and support of Gameheads staff and industry mentors, such as the team at Thrill Seekers who are the developers of the tower defense game Cookout Calamity.

Students from various locations, including Hawaii and Atlanta, were present. The event was covered live on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter). The students' energy and enthusiasm were palpable as they took to the stage to explain their creative processes and demonstrate the technical achievements of their games.

At the event, Kevin spoke and demystified the college application process for the ambitious students aiming for higher education.

Kevin had this to say about the event: "This is our first year partnering with Gameheads to support their students in their college admissions journeys. After my hour-long presentation focused on demystifying the college admissions process for the students, our partnership grew stronger, and I look forward to continuing to foster this relationship in the coming months and years to come..."

"Overall, the feedback from staff and students alike was overwhelmingly positive. In the words of the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Gameheads, Damon Packwood, via LinkedIn, 'This was so awesome!'"

During the presentation, students were lively and engaged, especially during the "Application Persona" segment of Kevin's presentation, where students offered interesting responses on how they would focus on their personas for their respective applications.
