How One College Admissions Company is Consistently Besting the Most Elite High Schools in the World

By Lindsey Kundel, Editor in Chief, InGenius Prep

What If the Best College Counseling Isn’t Where You Think It Is?

When I was a senior at a small Catholic high school in Iowa, we had two college counselors—for the entire school. That’s a ratio of about 200:1. I was a strong student with good grades and extracurriculars, but when it came to applying to college, I was flying blind. My assigned counselor told me not to bother applying to most of the schools on my list and suggested I save my parents the application fee.

I applied anyway. Regular decision. No guidance, no edits, no roadmap—just a stack of essays and a midnight deadline on January 1. By some mix of grit and luck, I got into every school I applied to, including Northwestern. But in today’s ultra-competitive admissions landscape, I know that approach wouldn’t fly. The margin for error has vanished.

That’s part of why I joined InGenius Prep.

I’ve spent over fifteen years in education—teaching in public, private, and international schools. I’ve seen firsthand just how much support students need to thrive in this process. It’s not just about grades or test scores anymore. It’s about narrative, strategy, timing, and knowing how to stand out in a crowd of tens of thousands.

And here’s the truth: InGenius Prep is doing something most people don’t think is possible. We’re helping students outperform the most prestigious high schools in the world—at a fraction of the cost.

When Strategy Beats Prestige: The Data That Turned Heads

For years, elite prep schools like Phillips Exeter, Dalton, and Horace Mann have enjoyed reputations as “feeder schools” to the Ivy League. The assumption is that these institutions offer built-in pipelines to top-tier universities.

But the numbers tell a different story.

Last admissions cycle, InGenius Prep placed more students into Top 10 U.S. universities than the #1 and #2 ranked high schools in the country. In fact, we placed 228% more students in Top 10 institutions than Phillips Exeter, despite having only 21% more seniors.

Let that sink in.

We’re not just holding our own—we’re consistently outperforming the schools that dominate college admissions conversations.

In just one cycle, our students earned:

  • 12 acceptances to MIT — more than Exeter, Andover, or Harvard-Westlake.
  • 7 to Harvard, 6 to Stanford, and 4 each to Yale and Princeton.
  • 36 total admits to the “Big Five” (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford).

These aren’t anomalies. They reflect a larger shift: students working with strategic, individualized support are gaining the edge—even over peers at the most powerful high schools in the world.

And yet, our tuition? Often less than a quarter of what elite prep schools charge annually.

The Context That Matters: Why These Numbers Are So Striking

InGenius Prep isn’t a school. We don’t control GPA weighting, teacher recommendations, or grade inflation. We don’t benefit from legacy pipelines or athletic recruitment loopholes. In fact:

  • Only 1% of our students are legacies (from a sibling or parent) at Top 20 universities.
  • Only 1% are recruited athletes.

Our students compete on merit and strategy—and they win.

We work with students globally, helping them identify their strengths, cultivate authentic passions, and present compelling narratives. Our team includes over 200 former admissions officers, full-time curriculum developers, and data analysts who guide students with insider insight and evidence-based methods.

It’s working—and not just at the Ivy League.

A Side-by-Side Comparison: InGenius vs. the World’s Top High Schools

Here’s how we stack up when it comes to acceptance rates at Top 10 and Top 20 universities:

We also saw standout performance at:

  • Northwestern: 15 InGenius admits vs. 3 at Exeter and 7 at Andover.
  • UPenn: 14 InGenius admits vs. 4 at Exeter and 7 at Harvard-Westlake.
  • Duke, Berkeley, UCLA, Rice, Michigan, UNC, USC, Vanderbilt, Emory, and UVA: In nearly every case, our students had higher admission numbers than those at top private schools.

The idea that elite outcomes require elite tuition is outdated. Strategy, not sticker price, is what moves the needle.

Why Expert Counseling Makes the Difference

Even top private schools rarely offer the kind of mentorship that drives long-term admissions success. Their student-to-counselor ratios hover around 30:1. Public schools are worse—430:1 on average.

At InGenius Prep, the ratio is more like 5:1 or 10:1. That means more time per student, earlier engagement, and a plan that unfolds over years—not months.

Most high school counselors, even at top schools, don’t begin working with students until junior year. By then, the most impactful decisions—course planning, activity involvement, summer programs—have already passed.

Our model flips that timeline. We meet students early, get to know their goals, and help them build a trajectory that actually supports their dreams.

And the research backs it up:

  • Students who receive expert college counseling are significantly more likely to apply to—and enroll in—selective colleges (NBER).
  • Schools with effective counselors see higher four-year college enrollment (Education Next).
  • Adding one more high school counselor can boost four-year college attendance by up to 10 percentage points (PACE).
  • Schools that meet the recommended 250:1 counselor ratio see better SATs, FAFSA completion, and college enrollment rates (ASCA).

In short: great counseling changes lives. But most students don’t get it—unless they come to us.

The Real Difference Isn’t Price—It’s Philosophy

Choosing a college admissions company can feel overwhelming. Many sound alike. Most make big promises. Few deliver the way families actually need.

At InGenius Prep, we don’t believe success comes from flashy marketing or inflated numbers—it comes from substance. From doing the hard work with students. From acting not as agents, but as educators.

Here’s what we tell families to look for when evaluating programs—whether it’s ours or anyone else’s:

  1. Work directly with former admissions officers. The people advising your child should know exactly how applications are reviewed—because they’ve sat in the room making those decisions.
  2. Demand real writing instruction. Strong college essays aren’t just personal—they’re purposeful. Students should be coached by professionals who can teach college-level writing, not just edit grammar.
  3. Look beyond mentorship. Great advice only matters if it’s actionable. Choose a company that provides both strategy and the resources to execute it—like research, internships, and leadership development.
  4. Ask how they measure results. Ivy League admit numbers are easy to throw around. What matters is how much more likely a student is to succeed with their program—ideally with data that compares similar students side by side.
  5. Look for an educational philosophy. Do they care about where your child ends up—or who they become in the process? At InGenius Prep, we prepare students not just to get in, but to thrive. Of the thousands we’ve worked with, only one has ever dropped out—and that was for financial reasons.
  6. Avoid part-time college student counselors. Professionalism matters. Families deserve consistent, experienced support—especially during a life-changing process.
  7. Beware the companies that rely on nonstop ads. Paid marketing isn’t a sign of quality—it’s often a sign of churn. InGenius Prep has grown from 0 to 300+ employees almost entirely through referrals and long-term partnerships.

We’ve worked with thousands of students over the last decade—across the U.S. and around the world. And we’ve learned this: the best outcomes don’t come from prestige. They come from preparation.

Conclusion: Redefining What’s Possible

As someone who once submitted a college application alone and at the last minute, I know what it feels like to go through this process without guidance.

I also know what’s possible when students have the right support.

At InGenius Prep, we’re changing the narrative—proving that top-tier college outcomes aren’t reserved for the lucky few at name-brand schools. They’re available to any student with ambition, support, and a smart strategy.

That’s the future of admissions. And I’m proud to be part of it.
