About Melissa Rains

Hello! I’m a Former Admissions Officer with InGenius Prep, based in Raleigh, NC. In my prior work as Director of Merit Scholarships at Duke University, I dedicated my time to finding, advising, and directing Duke’s top scholars. Throughout a long career of service to students, I’ve founded and designed nationally-recognized problem-based role play camps for gifted youth with the Duke University Talent Identification Program and implemented rigorous offerings for North Carolina’s Teaching Fellows. With numerous presentations to educational conferences and long-term experience working with multiple school departments, I bring a deep understanding of how to talk to university audiences. I’m a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Incarnate Word with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies and Elementary Education, and hold a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from North Carolina State University. I’m a member of the National Scholarships Provider Association and hold a Duke University Certificate of Excellence in Leadership.

It’s been my life’s passion to help gifted students find challenges and achieve their goals. As we get to know each other, I want to help you find your unique characteristics and accomplishments distinguishing you for a future of college and career excellence. I know what top schools seek and how to present yourself in a compelling way to make an admissions officer lean in when reading your application. I understand what it takes to build something from scratch and make it excellent, so don’t worry if you’re feeling like everything’s a rough draft right now. I bring honesty and authenticity to all my interactions and will help you do the same.

Outside of work I am a voracious reader of all genres, a baker, and a crafter. I volunteer with a local dog rescue and adore all kinds of critters. On weekends you can also find me cheering for the Carolina Hurricanes, taking my own chances on the ice, or singing in a garage band. I love domestic and international travel and have fond memories of trips to Italy, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. You can always find me near the closest body of water, because water is my happy place.
