Hello! My name is Emily Ulrich and I am a Graduate Coach with InGenius Prep. I received a B.A. in History and Linguistics from Dartmouth College, during which time I was also deeply invested in music and exploring the outdoors. I played in the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra, and was a proud member of the Dartmouth Outing Club.
My love of history and language took me to England to get an M.A. in something called “Text and Transmission.” This degree, taught out of the English Literature department at King’s College London, allowed me to work out of the British Library and track the cultural movement from manuscripts to the printing press.
My study of the historical circulation of literature took me to Yale, where I completed a PhD in Medieval Studies. My favorite part of the program was that it was interdisciplinary — I was able to use language (Latin, French, Italian, and English), literature (Chaucer, Grosseteste, and many anonymous authors), and history (monasteries and their libraries) to rediscover what types of books and what type of schooling medieval women read and received.
While at Yale, I taught a wide variety of classes — creative writing classes, academic writing classes, seminars on manuscripts, and a class on movie adaptations of famous medieval stories (like Beowulf and King Arthur). I bond very deeply with my students, and have often unofficially mentored students through their four years at Yale.
I truly believe that a wonderful education nourishes the whole person – both mind and soul – and I therefore thoroughly enjoy helping my high school students navigate the application process. Applying to college can be stressful, but it is also such a wonderful opportunity to learn about yourself and to find a great fit for your interests and personality. It is exciting to be part of this seminal process, and to help each student find his or her individual “voice.”
