Hello! I am a Graduate Coach at InGenius Prep and a second year PhD student in mathematics at the University of Cambridge. My research focuses on the applications of convex optimization. I received my Masters degree in mathematics from Cambridge and before that I completed my undergraduate degree at Imperial College. At both Cambridge and Imperial, I have worked as a tutor to undergraduate students and I also have many years of experience as a private tutor. Since starting at Cambridge, I have coached sixth-form students for admission to mathematics degrees at top UK universities. This includes volunteer experience working with underprivileged students who would not otherwise have access to such support. Over this time and through my own prior experiences, I have built up a detailed knowledge of the mathematics admission processes at these universities and can offer detailed guidance every step of the way.
My approach mathematics tutoring is a very problem-driven one. I like to encourage understanding of a topic through solving increasingly difficult problems in the area, building confidence surely and gradually before a full competency is reached. I have been doing mathematics full-time for many years now, which has given me a deep empathy for the struggle of facing new and unusual problems. For this reason I have a ‘no question is too stupid’ rule in all my sessions – the only way to improve at mathematics is by asking lots of questions when stuck! I take this philosophy throughout my admissions coaching too – I make sure that the student fully understands the task at hand and understands not only how to approach a task, but why the approach works.
Outside of mathematics I enjoy boxing, mixed martial arts and programming. I love the outdoors and take every chance I get to go hiking, fishing or cycling (I recently bought a tandem bicycle!). I am passionate about mathematics outreach as well, and have given several outreach talks to school students.
