Laura Gitelson

JD, New York University School of Law

BA, Economics and Public Policy, Swarthmore College

I am a Former Admissions Officer based outside of Boston, Massachusetts. I completed my Bachelor of Arts at Swarthmore College with a Major in Economics and a concentration in Public Policy. After working for a research nonprofit in Washington, D.C., I earned my JD at New York University School of Law, where I graduated cum laude. My passion is public service, so I began my career as a criminal defense attorney with The Legal Aid Society of New York. I have also worked as a public defender and in private practice in Massachusetts.

As an undergrad and a law student, I worked closely with admissions and student services, and was always interested in higher education. After transitioning out of law practice, I began working with law students at a number of law schools in Boston, both as a writing instructor and career advisor. I then spent six years as the Associate Director of Admissions at Boston University School of Law. At BU Law, I oversaw the review process for one of the largest JD applicant pools in the country. In addition to reading thousands of applications for JD admissions, I read hundreds of transfer applications and met with a variety of prospective students. I spent a lot of time getting to know students on the waitlist, and I loved when we were able to offer a spot in the class to one of these applicants. I also worked closely with the Director of Financial Aid in awarding merit-based scholarships and interviewed foreign-educated JD applicants.

After BU Law I spent 4 years as an Admissions Reader for MIT.  At MIT I learned what it takes for students to be admitted to one of the world's most selective STEM focused undergraduate programs.  As a participant in Admissions Committee discussions, I also learned a lot about what makes an applicant stand out and rise to the top of an incredibly competitive admissions process.  I look forward to using my experience to help high school students hone their applications to their top choice undergraduate schools.

One of my favorite things in all of my jobs has been building relationships and helping people fulfill their potential. I am excited about helping future law students find the schools that will be the best fit, and working with them to develop the strongest application possible.

I live outside Boston with my husband and two young kids. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, travel, volunteering, and sourdough bread baking.
