About John

I’m John Lyman — I graduated from Stanford in 2011 with a BA in Psychology. While at Stanford, I was Editor-in-Chief of the campus humor magazine, and also worked in several neuroscience research labs. My independent research project senior year married my dual interests in humor and the brain: I analyzed the neural responses of people while they viewed New Yorker cartoons inside the MRI.

I also worked part-time as a tutor throughout my undergrad years, and had an opportunity to work with many different students on a range of subjects. My specialty was essay workshops in this past tutoring role, and I credit the experience — along with my experience editing younger writers on my magazine — with developing a set of effective tools for mentoring and coaching students on how to write a compelling story.
