About Charles Gao

Charles is based in InGenius’ Beijing office, where he specializes in U.S. undergraduate admissions planning and long-term student development. With years of hands-on advising experience, he works across both STEM and the humanities, crafting tailored strategies for students with a wide range of backgrounds and goals.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego, where he double majored in Communication and Social Psychology, and later completed his master’s degree at Columbia University. His academic training in the humanities and social sciences allows him to approach applications in these fields with nuance and clarity, while his experience with STEM applicants gives him a strong command of academic planning, research development, and overall application strategy. He supports students across disciplines with a well-rounded, integrated approach.

Having grown up in Beijing and attended international schools throughout his education, Charles is well versed in both the Chinese and U.S. education systems and the cultural context surrounding them. He understands the priorities and concerns of both students and parents, and offers guidance that is practical, thoughtful, and grounded in real-world experience.

Charles takes a student-centered approach and builds strong, trust-based relationships through consistency, attentiveness, and genuine care. He has a sharp eye for each student’s individual strengths—whether guiding STEM students in developing research and competition profiles or helping humanities-focused students refine their academic interests and personal narratives. His work is both strategic and detail-oriented, helping students move forward with clarity and present applications that feel both compelling and authentic.

Outside of work, Charles enjoys basketball, tennis, and golf. He brings the same focus, patience, and steady commitment to his work with students, supporting their growth and helping them reach their admissions goals.
